The Dice Game for Mooncakes (Bo-Bing)
A Mid-Autumn Cultural Tradition Passed Down for Over 300 Years in Kinmen

The Dice Game for Mooncakes (Bo-Bing), also known as "Bo Bing," is a traditional game played during Mid-Autumn Festival with a history of over 300 years in Kinmen. The game involves rolling six dice to determine prizes, which are named after titles from the imperial examination system, such as Zhuangyuan (Top Scholar), Bangyan (Second Place), and Tanhua (Third Place), symbolizing success, good fortune, and auspiciousness.

There are two main theories about its origin: one suggests that General Hong Xu, a Kinmen native and subordinate of Zheng Chenggong (Koxinga), created the game to boost soldiers’ morale during the Mid-Autumn Festival; the other believes it began with scholars who, before attending the autumn imperial exam, played the game to seek blessings and good omens.

More than just a festive activity, Bo Bing is seen as a way to predict academic luck and future fortune. Through this game, people express their hopes and wishes for the future, while also promoting the values of diligence in study and the pursuit of excellence.
